Shaba Barnes, 73, was born in New York City, and now resides in Albuquerque, NM. She was involved in the First West Coast Old Lesbian Celebration in 1987 at California State Dominguez Hills, a conference that was one of the forerunners of OLOC. She served as a Co-Director of the Steering Committee and member of the Board of Directors of OLOC from August 2004 until January 2007.
Shaba is a retired Science of Mind Minister. She had a weekly radio show called In The Flow for several years, and also spent a great deal of time involved in Women Prison Ministries. She is past secretary of the LA Chapter of NOW and participated in the Feminist Theater. Shaba was nominated a representative at the World Conference of the International Federation for the Formation of the Permanent Integration for Women in Mexico in 1975. She has also been a community activist for many years as well as a world traveler.
Her responsibilities as a Co-Director of OLOC included Outreach, Communication and Media. Since her retirement from the OLOC Board of Directors and Steering Committee, she has headed the OLOC Memorial Project which she helped found. The Project honors Lesbians who have passed with a Memorial program at the National Gathering and maintains the Memorial Plaques. She is an ongoing contributor to developing the web presence of the Project.
